Death of 1,187 people as a result of drug-related reasons in 2018 was the highest of all the deaths that have been reported in Scotland (Scottish Government, 2019).

Over 250,000 people are provided daily doses of methadone. Despite this investment for change, alcohol and substance abuse problems persist and continue to plague Scotland. There is need for evidence-based treatment

Drug-related deaths and hospital admissions are increasing every year admissions, thousands of vulnerable people with complex needs have no access to psychosocial intervention and recovery activities unless they are being referred. New-life recovery is a daily drop-in Centre for this group to access initial treatment and to work with people who are not ready for a change to explore the circle of change.

More needs to be done to protect those most at risk of harm and death.

Psychosocial intervention must be strategically integrated into recovery services. This intervention must be integrated and follow a strategy of complementarity that makes it concerted and monitored in a holistic approach. The strategy supports well-evidenced approaches to reduce harm, including for people who feel unready for treatment.
